Originally established as a special conference of the Pennsylvania Ministerium in 1812, the Joint Synod petitioned the ministerium to form an independent body in 1817, and in 1818 the first general conference of the synod was held in Somerset, Ohio. Holy Trinity has its roots in St. John’s Lutheran Church, which was started by the Iowa Synod in September, 1890. The group met in a Congregational church until 1893 when a church was erected at 9th and Laurel. The congregation was formally organized in 1894 as a German language group. In 1907 St. John’s was taken over by the Joint Synod of Ohio and served by pastors from Victoria until 1915, when the center of the parish was switched to Port Angeles.
